What glass do I need for my frameless balustrade?

Frameless glass balustrade by Vantage Balustrades installed on a landing area in London

Every installation scenario is different and therefore there are a range of different glass options for you to choose from.  The most common sizes for residential and light commercial are: 12mm, 15mm, 17.5mm, 19mm and 21.5mm.

As mentioned in a previous post you need to have a double barrier in place so if you don’t want a handrail ontop of the glass you need to opt for a laminate glass.  If you choose a mono glass you’ll need a handrail ontop.

Ever installation scenario requires a different loading and requires different glass thicknesses so here’s a quick guide;

Domestic installation internal (stairs & landings) = 12mm toughened or 17.5mm toughened laminate

Domestic installation external (balconies) = 15mm toughened or 21.5mm toughened laminate

Light commercial (small offices etc) = 15mm toughened or 21.5mm toughened laminate

Restaurants & bars = 19mm toughened or 21.5mm toughened laminate (sentry glass)
