Patio installation in sunny Cornwall

Frameless glass balustrade around a patio area in Cornwall

Quick overview

Cornwall is a lovely part of the World, stunning coastal views but also some stunning landscapes as well. Peter in North Cornwall wanted to make the most of his raised patio area. Having had an old wood banister in place before he knew it was time for a change.

Understandably he didn’t want to loose his stunning view over the countryside. He might have gone for a 'post and rail' system. This is where you have posts either steel or wood with glass infill panels. With these systems though you loose some of the view with the large upright posts!

What to use?

Peter asked us what other options other than wood could he utilise. We do do stainless steel post and rail systems but we always suggest going frameless!

The benefits of a Vantage glass balustrade are too many to mention but to name two. Firstly you get the protection the barrier creates. Our use of glass has evolved and therefore the technology behind has has as well. Glass is used in floors, roofs and endless situations where you wouldn't have thought years ago.

With our frameless channel systems the glass is held in place purely at the base so you don't need any vertical posts! This allows Peter to see his view with nothing to spoil it!

The job

Being a DIY chap Peter installed our Solus frameless balustrade system himself. We always make sure our products DIY friendly in every way. If need to you can always get a trades person to install your glass balustrade for you.

The channel the glass sits into is pre-drilled at 200mm centres. Peter simply drilled holes inline with the channel holes. He used expanding M12 bolts to fix the channel to the patio. Sometimes people use resin fix when fixing to masonary work.

When in he measured for the glass, allowing for 10mm gaps between panels. When the glass arrived he fitted it in the channel with our innovative clamping method. The whole project of just over 21m took less than two days (one day to install the channel and measure the glass then another day to fit the glass).
